Cheesesteak Sandwiches

The Cheesesteak Sandwich, also known as a Philly Cheesesteak, is a classic sandwich originating from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It’s a simple yet delicious sandwich made with shaved beef, melted cheese, and caramelized onions, all served on a toasted roll. If you’re looking for a satisfying and hearty sandwich that is packed with flavor, then this recipe is for you.

Origins of the Cheesesteak Sandwich:

The Cheesesteak Sandwich is said to have been invented in the 1930s by a hot dog vendor named Pat Olivieri, who decided to put some beef from a nearby butcher on his grill. A taxi driver passing by smelled the delicious aroma and asked for a sandwich, and that’s how the first cheesesteak was born. Pat’s King of Steaks, the original cheesesteak shop, still stands at the corner of 9th and Passyunk in South Philadelphia, to this day.

Choosing the Right Ingredients:

The most important ingredient in a cheesesteak is the meat, and it’s essential to choose the right cut. The traditional cut of meat used in this sandwich is ribeye or sirloin, but you can also use other cuts like skirt steak or flank steak. The key is to use a cut of beef that is tender and flavorful. Ask your butcher to shave the beef for you, or you can also thinly slice the steak yourself at home. Let’s jump into the recipe!

Difficulty: Easy
Total Time 45 minutes
Course Main Course
Cuisine American
Servings 4

Ingredients

  • 2.5lbs shaved beef
  • 9 slices of provolone cheese or cheddar cheese
  • 1 large sliced sweet onion
  • 4 Italian rolls
  • Salt, pepper, and garlic powder, to taste
  • Butter, for toasting the bread

Instructions

  • Preheat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.
  • Add the sliced onions to the skillet or griddle and cook them over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until they are translucent and lightly caramelized. This should take about 5-7 minutes. Remove the onions from the skillet and set them aside.
  • Add the shaved beef to the skillet, spreading it out in an even layer. Season the beef with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Cook the beef for about 3 minutes per side, or until it has a nice sear and is cooked to your liking.
  • Return the cooked onions to the skillet and mix them with the beef.
  • Divide the beef and onion mixture into 4 equal portions.
  • Place 3 slices of cheese on top of each portion of beef and onion mixture. Cover the skillet or griddle with a lid or foil to help the cheese melt faster.
  • Cook the sandwiches for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and gooey.
  • Toast the Italian rolls in a toaster or under a broiler or on your griddle, brushing them with butter on both sides. This step is optional, but toasting the rolls will add a nice crispy texture to your sandwich.
  • Assemble the sandwiches by placing the beef and onion mixture on the toasted rolls.
  • Let the sandwiches cool for 3 minutes before serving. This will help the flavors meld together and also make it easier to eat.
  • Cut the sandwiches in half and serve them immediately. Enjoy your delicious Cheesesteak Sandwich!

Notes

You can also add other toppings like bell peppers, mushrooms, or jalapeños to the sandwich to make it even more flavorful.
