Edible Bat Wings- Halloween Chicken Wings

When you serve the drum and flat connected these halloween chicken wings look like bats. Inject the whole wing with butter and Franks RedHot and food coloring to dye the wing red. Then soak them in a black colored soy honey and chili paste mixture for 12 hours. Grill them at 350 and let them get up to 185. They will be black on the outside and red on the inside.

Why Use Whole Wings

Don’t separate the wing from the drum. You want them whole, that’s what makes it look like a bat.

A wing that is cut in half looks like nothing. When left whole and cooked they will look like a bat when placed on a plate. The drum will be the body of the bat and the wing will look like it has its wings spread. Put 2 of them together on a plate and they look like a pair of bats.

That’s it, no extra steps, just keep them attached. Also using jumbo wings helps because they’re bigger.

Red Inside and Black Outside

We are adding two different colors to these wings. One inside and one outside.

The food coloring that we add to the butter and wing sauce is to make them red on the inside. Because we are injecting them the color will go into the meat. If you didn’t inject them the red would only be on the skin of the wing and wouldn’t show on the inside.

The black food coloring is added to the marinade which will stain the outside of the wing. We add this because the red won’t be visible on the outside of the wing since we are injecting it. So by staining the skin of the wing black it stays black when cooking.

If you only did one or the other you would only see half the effect.

Make sure your injection mixture is nice and loose. The honey needs to be dissolved into the butter and sauce.

How I Made Halloween Chicken Wings

Pat your chicken wings dry.

Melt butter and add the rest of the ingredients to your injection mixture. Make sure the honey is dissolved into the mixture.

Use the injector and inject the wing and drum.

Place injected wings in a bowl.

Whisk together the marinade ingredients in a separate bowl.

Pour the marinade over the wings. Mix well and place in the refrigerator for at least 12 hours.

Grill at 350 flipping occasionally until they reach an internal temp of 185.

Serve on a plate. Place the drum and flat next to each other.

You can find times and temperatures on the recipe card.

  • Two mixing bowls One for the injection, one for the marinade.

Method

Inject
  1. Pat the whole wings completely dry. Do not separate the drum from the flat.
  2. Melt the butter and combine with the wing sauce, honey and red food coloring. Mix until the honey is fully dissolved and the mixture is loose.
  3. Load the injector and inject each wing in both the drum and the flat. Place the injected wings in a bowl.

  1. In a separate bowl, whisk together the olive oil, soy sauce, honey, chili paste and black food coloring.
  2. Pour the marinade over the wings and toss to coat every one. Cover and refrigerate at least 12 hours, preferably overnight.
Grill and Serve

  2. Arrange on a platter with the drum and flat of each wing side by side so each one looks like a bat. Serve with celery, carrots and ranch or blue cheese.

Notes

Whole wings: The intact drum and flat is what makes the bat shape. Jumbo wings have more span and read better.
Two colors, two jobs: The red goes in by injection so it colors the meat. The black goes on by marinade so it stains the skin. One without the other is half the effect.
Loose injection mixture: Undissolved honey clogs the injector.
Other colors: Swap the black food coloring for whatever you want.
Doneness: 185°F exceeds the USDA 165°F for poultry. Wings are dark meat and take it without drying out.
Timing: Cook time and servings are estimates. The 350°F, 185°F and 12 hour minimum marinade are as given.
